Three Dark Crowns (Drie donkere kronen)- Kendare Blake


Drie zussen, geboren op dezelfde dag. Eén koningin is een ervaren vergiftiger, de andere is een koningin die de elementen kan beheren en de laatste kan de natuur naar haar hand zetten. Na hun 16de verjaardag zullen zij alles op alles moeten zetten om de kroon te krijgen en te kunnen heersen. De enige optie om de kroon te krijgen is om de andere twee te vermoorden…

Klinkt interessant toch? Mij leek het een erg donker en spannend boek. Het is uitgekomen op 20 september en een week later had ik het in huis. Ik was erg enthousiast door de beschrijving die ik hoorde van Book(You)tubers. Toen ik het eenmaal in mijn handen had kon ik dan ook niet wachten om het lezen, ik was echter wel teleurgesteld dat het over 16-jarige ging. Dat had ik  van te voren niet begrepen. Dat aspect is nog het minst wat ik niet leuk vond aan het boek, maar ik had graag gehad dat ze bijv. 19 waren, dan ben je meestal toch wat volwassener en misschien wat minder beïnvloedbaar, maar dat is natuurlijk de bedoeling van het verhaal.

Elk hoofdstuk heeft een ander verhaallijn, een andere koningin. Je rouleert tussen de meiden en leert ze zo beetje bij beetje kennen. Het verhaal begon langzaam en erg spannender werd het niet. Ik vind het concept erg leuk bedacht en daarom wilde ik het ook erg graag lezen. Maar het is een erg voorspelbaar verhaal, niet alles is voorspelbaar, maar je kunt vaak wel de gebeurtenis verderop in het verhaal raden en dat vind ik erg jammer.'

Er komt nog een boek uit, het tweede deel (One Dark Throne). En ik denk dat ze het af kan ronden in twee boeken, zeker ook omdat het tweede boek al één troon heet en ik het zonde zou vinden als het verhaal erg uitgestrekt zal worden. Wat misschien beter was geweest is dat ze drie afzonderlijke boeken had geschreven, elke koningin een boek. Die zouden dan wel allemaal tegelijk moeten worden uitgebracht wil je niet te veel verklappen over hoe het verhaal verder gaat.

Ik heb geprobeerd te kijken of dit boek vertaald gaat worden, maar omdat het net pas uit is, betwijfel ik of dat snel is. Ik ben niet persé voor of tegen het vertalen van boeken van het Engels naar het Nederlands, maar ik denk dat dit boek niet hoog op de lijst zal staan omdat het nog best tegenvalt.

Ik hoop dat het tweede boek spannender en minder voorspelbaar is! Ik geef dit boek 3,5 ster. Omdat het concept wel leuk is alleen de uitvoering beter geschreven kon worden.

Fairyloot October book was a Villainous read about an Asian Evil Queen. I did not expected much of it because I do not like Snowwhite's story and I'm new to the Asian setting. I do think that Asian culture is very interesting to learn from and about. The Queen of the Tearling Series by Erika Johansen

When Kelsea Glynn is 19 years old, a group of men appear at her doorstep and take her to the Keep. There is her castle, because Kelsea isn't just some 19 year old girl. She is the Queen of the Tearling. With every book in this series I needed some time to get into the story, because the chapters are very large and it sometimes switches between POV's. Which is totally fine, but it sometimes distracted me too much. I really like this world building, I had some difficult with understanding when the story takes place (future) but after a while I got it and that made the books better. Although I did not like every aspect of Kelsea, Johansen is such a great writer. I liked how Johansen wrote the mysteries and made it all come together. I often was blown away by the revelation of some aspects of the stories! Kelsea is a strong young woman with a strong mind, but sometimes she does not think her actions through...and that has consequences. I also have a big dislike about her attit

Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer

This is not just a retelling about Aurora, but also about another girl, never been told. About her sister Isabelle. These two sisters are very different, but grew up together in the castle. And while Malfleur is getting stronger, the kingdoms are divided. And the girls get separated. This story is different from what I expected, I thought it would be more excitement. But although I was disappointed, it did read like a fairytale. It had a slow pace and that suit the story, the story about Sleeping Beauty. Because the writing wasn’t that fast paced I took my time reading, I even went three days without reading because I didn’t was drawn to it that much. I wish the story would have contained more excitement, more mystery and maybe folklore? I love Folklore and especially in fairytale books! This is definitely a fairytale retelling that reads like a real fairytale, like Hunted by Meagon Spooner. Next year Hillyer will bring out another book “Winter Glass” I think that this will
